Quick answer: AEO, or answer engine optimization, is the work of making your business easy for answer tools such as ChatGPT, Google's AI Overviews and Perplexity to find, understand and cite when someone asks a question. It builds on SEO with crawlable pages, consistent business facts and clear, direct answers. Nobody can guarantee a mention.

A quick note on the name: in shipping and customs, AEO also stands for Authorized Economic Operator, a customs status for trusted traders. This guide is about the search and marketing meaning, answer engine optimization.

What is answer engine optimization?

An answer engine is any tool that replies to a question with an answer instead of a list of links. That includes ChatGPT search, Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, Microsoft Copilot, Perplexity and voice assistants. Answer engine optimization is the work of making your pages and your business facts the ones those tools pick up, quote and link to.

For a dental practice, the question might be "Which dentist near me takes walk-in emergencies?" or "Is a dental implant or a bridge better for one missing tooth?" A good answer engine result names a few practices or sources and links the pages it used. AEO is about being one of them, with your details described correctly. That's the focus of my AI search optimization for dental practices.

AEO vs GEO vs SEO: what's the difference?

The three terms overlap, and people in the industry use them differently. Here's the plain version:

SEO AEO GEO
Stands for Search engine optimization Answer engine optimization Generative engine optimization
Where you show up Search results, including Google Maps Direct answers: AI answers, featured snippets, voice Answers written by generative AI tools
What success looks like Rankings, clicks and calls Being named or cited in the answer Being named or cited in the answer
What it's built on Crawlable pages, relevance, links, reviews SEO, plus answer-first pages and consistent facts SEO, plus mentions on sources AI tools trust

In practice, AEO and GEO describe the same goal from two angles, and both depend on SEO.

What is GEO (generative engine optimization)?

GEO is the name for optimizing content so generative AI tools include it in the answers they write. The term comes from a 2023 research paper, GEO: Generative Engine Optimization, by Pranjal Aggarwal and colleagues, which looked at how website owners can make their content more visible in answers from generative search engines.

Today, GEO and AEO are mostly used for the same work. Some people use AEO for any direct answer, including featured snippets and voice, and GEO only for answers written by AI models. If an agency pitches GEO as something separate from AEO, ask what it would actually do differently.

Is AEO replacing SEO?

No. Google says there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and that a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet to be a supporting link (AI features and your website). Google also says you don't need new machine-readable files, AI text files or special schema.org structured data to appear in those features.

ChatGPT works the same way at the basic level. OpenAI says ChatGPT ranks search results using multiple factors, that placement is not guaranteed, and that a site needs to allow OAI-SearchBot to be eligible (Searching the web with ChatGPT). If a page can't be crawled, indexed and understood, no amount of AEO will get it cited.

How do AI answers pick a dentist?

No AI company publishes a formula. What they do publish is where answers come from:

  • Their own crawlers. OpenAI says OAI-SearchBot is used to surface websites in ChatGPT search (OpenAI crawlers), and Perplexity says PerplexityBot surfaces and links websites in its search results (Perplexity crawlers).
  • Search indexes. Google's AI features use pages from Google Search, and OpenAI says ChatGPT search sometimes rewrites questions into searches it sends to partner search providers.
  • Business listings and location. OpenAI says ChatGPT can use approximate location to find local results, and Google asks businesses to keep their Business Profile information up to date for its AI features.

Put together, an AI answer about dentists in your area is built from pages and listings that the tool can reach and that agree with each other. A practice whose website, Business Profile and directory listings all say the same thing is easier to describe correctly than one with three different phone numbers and old hours.

What does AEO look like for a dental practice?

  1. Crawler access. Check that your robots.txt, firewall and security plugin allow Googlebot, Bingbot, OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot.
  2. Consistent facts. Your practice name, address, phone, hours, dentists and accepted insurance plans should match on your website, your Google Business Profile and major directories.
  3. Quotable service pages. Each treatment page should open with a short, direct answer to the question patients ask about it, followed by the detail.
  4. Mentions on trusted sources. Listings and coverage on local news sites, dental associations and community pages give AI tools something other than your own site to confirm who you are.
  5. Structured data that matches the page. Google says your structured data should match the visible text. Accurate Dentist or LocalBusiness markup is still worth having, and it doesn't need to be special AI markup.

How do you measure AEO?

Google counts visits from AI Overviews and AI Mode in the Performance report in Search Console, within the overall web search traffic, but no tool shows every AI answer that mentions you. So pick 10 to 20 questions patients ask, such as "emergency dentist open Saturday in [city]," and ask them in ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Copilot and Perplexity once a month. Record whether your practice is named, whether the details are right and which pages are cited. Answers change between runs, so ask each question more than once. In your analytics, you can also watch for visits referred from AI tools.

What should you avoid?

  • Hidden text or instructions aimed at AI tools. Google's spam policies cover hidden text.
  • Hundreds of near-identical pages written to catch AI questions. The same policies cover scaled content abuse.
  • Anyone who promises to put you at the top of ChatGPT. OpenAI says placement is not guaranteed, and nobody can promise you a spot in an AI answer.

Want help with it?

You can do the basics yourself. If you'd rather have it done for you, my AEO and GEO work covers crawler access, consistent facts, answer-first pages and monthly checks of what AI tools say about you. It sits on top of the dental SEO work that gets you found in Google and Google Maps.

FAQ

What does AEO stand for in marketing?

AEO stands for answer engine optimization: making your content and business facts easy for answer tools such as ChatGPT, Google's AI Overviews and Perplexity to find and cite. In customs and shipping, AEO means Authorized Economic Operator, which is unrelated.

Is AEO the same as GEO?

Mostly. GEO, or generative engine optimization, comes from a 2023 research paper and focuses on answers written by generative AI tools. AEO is often used more broadly to include featured snippets and voice answers. The work behind both is largely the same.

Is AEO replacing SEO?

No. Google says pages must be indexed and eligible for a snippet to appear as links in AI Overviews and AI Mode, and there are no additional requirements. AEO builds on SEO rather than replacing it.

Can anyone guarantee my practice shows up in ChatGPT?

No. OpenAI says ChatGPT ranks search results using multiple factors and that placement is not guaranteed. You can make a mention more likely with crawler access, consistent facts and clear pages, but nobody can guarantee placement.

Do I need special schema or an llms.txt file for AEO?

Not for Google. Google says you don't need new machine-readable files, AI text files or special schema.org structured data to appear in its AI features. Accurate structured data that matches your page is still worth having.

How long does AEO take to work?

There's no fixed timeline. OpenAI and Perplexity say robots.txt changes take about 24 hours to show up on their side, and Google says crawling can take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks. Consistent facts, answer-first pages and mentions on other sites build over months, and results depend on your competition.
