AI SEO Agency for Dentists and Home Service Businesses
AI SEO (also called AEO, answer engine optimization, or GEO, generative engine optimization) is the work of making your business the one that ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews name when someone asks for a recommendation, by giving those tools clear, consistent facts about you and pages they can quote. I do this for dental practices and HVAC and plumbing companies, as one person rather than a large agency. I've worked in SEO and Google Ads for 14+ years, with 150+ dental & local service businesses served, and I helped scale two dental practices to $5M.
Your next patient or customer may never see ten blue links. They ask "Who's a good implant dentist near me?" or "Which plumber in Austin does same-day water heater repair?" and get a short answer with two or three names. This page explains how those answers are built, what I do to put your business in them, and what nobody, including me, can promise.
What AEO and GEO mean, in plain English
The labels overlap, so here's how I use them:
| Term | Plain-English meaning | Where it shows up |
|---|---|---|
| SEO | Getting your pages to rank in Google's regular results and Maps | Google Search, Google Maps |
| AEO (answer engine optimization) | Writing and structuring pages so a search engine or assistant can lift a direct answer from them | AI Overviews, featured snippets, voice assistants |
| GEO (generative engine optimization) | Getting a business cited or named inside answers written by AI models | ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Google AI Mode |
| AI SEO / LLM SEO | The umbrella term most people search for. It covers AEO and GEO together | All of the above |
In practice they're one job. AI tools pull from the web: from search indexes, from your website, from directories and from what other sites say about you. If those sources are clear, consistent and easy to quote, you get mentioned. If they're thin or contradictory, the AI picks someone else.
How AI tools decide which business to recommend
No AI company publishes a ranking formula, so be wary of anyone who claims to know one. What is published is how these tools find content:
| AI tool | What it reads | What that means for you | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google AI Overviews and AI Mode | Google's normal search index. A page must be indexed and eligible to show a snippet; Google says there are no extra technical requirements or special schema | Strong regular SEO is the entry ticket | Google Search Central |
| ChatGPT search | Pages crawled by OpenAI's OAI-SearchBot. Sites that block it won't be shown in ChatGPT search answers | Your robots.txt and firewall must let it in | OpenAI |
| Perplexity | Pages crawled by PerplexityBot, which Perplexity recommends allowing if you want to appear in its results | Same check: robots.txt and firewall settings | Perplexity |
| All of them | Your Google Business Profile, directories, reviews and articles that mention you | The same facts need to appear everywhere | Observed pattern, not a published rule |
Two things follow from this. First, AI visibility sits on top of SEO; it doesn't replace it. Second, many small-business sites are invisible to AI tools for a dull technical reason: a security plugin or hosting firewall blocks the crawlers. That's the first thing I check.
How my AI SEO process works
1. AI visibility check and fix list (weeks 1-2)
I ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google (with AI Overviews) the questions your customers actually ask, for your services and your service area, and record who gets named, what's said about you and which sources are cited. You get a plain-English summary of where you appear, where competitors appear instead and why, plus a fix list.
2. Technical access (weeks 1-2)
I confirm that Googlebot, OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot can reach your pages, that your important pages are indexed in Google, and that your content is in real text, not locked inside images or scripts. A typical robots.txt that allows the search crawlers looks like this:
User-agent: OAI-SearchBot
Allow: /
User-agent: PerplexityBot
Allow: /
User-agent: Googlebot
Allow: /
Whether you also allow model-training crawlers (such as GPTBot or Google-Extended) is a separate business decision. Blocking training doesn't block search visibility, and I'll walk you through the trade-off.
3. Entity cleanup (month 1-2)
An "entity" is how machines understand your business: its name, address, phone, services, people, hours and service area. I make those facts identical across your website, Google Business Profile, Apple Maps, Bing Places, Yelp, industry directories and your schema markup. One wrong phone number or an old address on a directory is enough to make an AI tool hedge or skip you.
4. Answer-ready pages (month 2-4)
I rewrite your key service pages and FAQs so the first sentence of each section answers the question directly, then add detail. Compare:
Example (hypothetical practice)
| Before | After |
|---|---|
| "We're passionate about giving every patient the care they deserve, and implants are one of many ways we..." | "Dental implants replace a missing tooth with a titanium post and a crown. At [Practice name], Dr. [Last name] places and restores implants in the same office, usually over several visits." |
The second version can be quoted word for word. It names who, what and where in one go. I add matching FAQPage, Service and LocalBusiness schema so the structure is explicit, while keeping the visible text the source of truth.
5. Citations and mentions (ongoing)
AI answers lean on what other sources say about you. I build mentions on the kinds of sources these tools tend to cite: local news and community sites, industry associations, supplier and partner pages, well-maintained directories and genuine customer reviews. No paid link schemes, no fake review sites.
6. Monthly tracking (ongoing)
Each month I re-run a fixed set of questions across the main AI tools and report, alongside your Google rankings and calls:
- Which questions you were named in, and which you weren't
- Which competitors were named instead
- Which sources the AI cited, so we know where to build next
- Any wrong facts about your business that need correcting
AI answers vary from one session to the next, so I treat this as a trend, not a scoreboard. Google also counts clicks from AI Overviews and AI Mode inside the normal Search Console Performance report (Google), which we track too.
AEO for dentists
Patients ask AI tools questions like "best dentist for nervous patients near me," "how much do dental implants cost in Denver" or "is Invisalign® treatment worth it." For a practice, AEO comes down to four things:
- Treatment pages that answer patient questions first: what the treatment is, who it suits, how many visits, recovery and what affects cost, without quoting prices you can't stand behind.
- Visible expertise: your dentists' names, credentials and real photos on every treatment page. Dental content is health content, and AI tools and Google both favor clearly attributed, trustworthy sources.
- One consistent profile: the same practice name, address, phone and specialties on your site, Google, Healthgrades, Zocdoc (if you use it) and the dental directories.
- Reviews that describe the experience, collected by asking every patient the same way, and replies that never confirm treatment details.
For the full Maps and website side, see dental SEO. It covers the Google Business Profile and treatment-page work that AI answers build on.
AEO for HVAC and plumbing companies
Home service questions are urgent and local: "AC not cooling, who can come today in Phoenix," "emergency plumber open now," "tankless water heater installer near me." What gets a contractor named:
- Service-area facts stated plainly: the cities and ZIP codes you cover, your hours and whether you offer emergency or same-day service, all identical everywhere online.
- One page per job type (AC repair, furnace replacement, drain cleaning, water heater installation) that answers the common questions in the first lines.
- License, insurance and brand certifications shown in text, not only in a logo image.
- Reviews that mention the job and the town, which help AI tools match you to specific requests.
The trade-specific detail lives on HVAC SEO and plumbing SEO.
AI SEO vs traditional SEO: you need both
| Traditional SEO | AI SEO (AEO / GEO) | |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | Rank a page in Google results and Maps | Get your business named or cited in an AI answer |
| What the customer sees | A list of links and a map | A short written answer with a few names |
| Main levers | Relevance, technical health, links, Google Business Profile | All of SEO, plus consistent facts everywhere, quotable answers and third-party mentions |
| How it's measured | Rankings, clicks, calls | Mentions across a fixed question set, cited sources, plus calls |
| Relationship | The foundation | Built on top of the foundation |
If your Google Business Profile is incomplete or your site has crawl problems, start there. My local SEO work covers the Maps foundation for any local business.
After you're found: answer every call
Getting named by ChatGPT is wasted if the call goes to voicemail. If the first business they call doesn't pick up, the next name on the list is one tap away. My AI answering service helps cover the calls your team can't take, starting with missed-call text-back (available now for Google Ads clients, by request).
How to choose an AI SEO agency
Many firms now say they "do AI SEO." Ask these questions before you sign:
Do you guarantee placement in ChatGPT or AI Overviews? Walk away if the answer is yes. AI answers change from one session to the next, and Google says indexing and serving aren't guaranteed even when a page meets every requirement (Google).
Do you mean AI visibility, or using AI to write content faster? They're different services, and mass-producing pages to manipulate rankings breaks Google's spam policies whether a person or a tool writes them.
How will you measure it? You want a fixed question set re-run monthly and tied to calls, not a single screenshot.
Will you check that AI crawlers can reach my site? If they can't name OAI-SearchBot or PerplexityBot, keep looking.
Do you sell an "llms.txt file" or special AI markup as the fix? Google states you don't need new machine-readable files, AI text files or special schema to appear in its AI features (Google).
Who does the work, and is there a long-term contract? With me, you talk to the person doing the work, and there are no long-term contracts. Terms are month-to-month, with no minimum term and 30 days' notice.

Frequently asked questions
What is an AI SEO agency?
An AI SEO agency helps a business get found and recommended in AI-generated answers from tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews, as well as in regular search. The work covers technical access for AI crawlers, consistent business facts, answer-first content, third-party mentions and monthly tracking of AI mentions.
What is answer engine optimization?
Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring content so search engines and AI assistants can pull a direct answer from it. That means stating the answer in the first sentence, using clear headings and FAQs, and adding schema markup that matches the visible text.
What is generative engine optimization?
Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the practice of getting a business cited or named inside answers written by AI models such as ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini. It builds on SEO and adds consistent facts across the web, quotable pages and mentions on sources AI tools trust.
How do I rank in ChatGPT?
ChatGPT doesn't rank businesses in a fixed list, but you can make it more likely to name you. Allow OAI-SearchBot in your robots.txt and firewall, keep your business facts identical everywhere online, publish pages that answer customer questions in the first sentence, and earn mentions on reputable local and industry sites.
How do I show up in Google AI Overviews?
Google says there are no extra requirements for AI Overviews: a page must be indexed and eligible to show a snippet in regular search. So the path is strong SEO fundamentals, content that answers questions directly, structured data that matches the visible text and an up-to-date Google Business Profile.
How long does it take to show up in AI answers?
It depends on how often crawlers revisit your site, how consistent your facts already are and how competitive your area is. Crawler access changes can take effect within days, while Google says recrawling can take from several days to several months. Mentions and content build over months, and nobody can guarantee placement.
Is AI SEO different from regular SEO?
AI SEO builds on regular SEO rather than replacing it. Google AI Overviews use Google's normal index, and other AI tools still read websites and directories. The extra work is making facts consistent everywhere, writing answer-first pages, earning third-party mentions and tracking AI mentions.
Do I need to sign a long-term contract?
No. There are no long-term contracts. Terms are month-to-month, with no minimum term and 30 days' notice.
