Google Ads for HVAC Companies, Planned Around Your Seasons
HVAC advertising on Google works best when the budget moves with the weather and with your crew's capacity: heavier in the first heat wave and the first cold snap, lighter when your techs are booked out, with repair, replacement and maintenance searches in separate campaigns. I build and run Google Ads for heating and cooling companies that way, track the calls the ads produce, and report each month on calls and booked jobs where your scheduling data allows. You talk to me, the person running the account. I've worked in SEO and Google Ads for 14+ years, and there's no long-term contract.
Where HVAC companies waste ad spend
HVAC accounts have their own ways of leaking money, on top of the general setup problems covered on my Google Ads management page:
| Leak | Why it happens in HVAC | What I do instead |
|---|---|---|
| Same budget all year | Demand swings with temperature, so a flat budget runs dry in a heat wave and overspends in mild weeks | Budgets planned by season, then adjusted week to week as the forecast and your schedule change |
| Ads running when the schedule is full | Calls you can't book in a reasonable time go to a competitor anyway | Budgets and schedules tied to how far out your techs are booked |
| Repair and replacement in one campaign | Cheaper repair clicks use up the budget meant for replacement and heat pump searches | Separate campaigns for repair, replacement and maintenance, each with its own budget |
| Ads for systems you don't service | Ads show for fuel types, equipment or services you don't offer | Keywords and negatives built around the systems you actually install and service |
| Counting calls, not jobs | A tune-up call and a full system replacement count the same | Calls tracked by campaign and matched to booked jobs and job type where possible |
How it works
Audit and fix list in weeks 1-2, core work over months 1-4.
We agree your 30-day setup and fix list up front. If it isn't delivered in 30 days, your first month is refunded. I guarantee the work, not rankings or results.
Audit. If you already run ads, I review where the money goes. You own your Google Ads account, and I'm added as a user. For a deeper review of an existing account on its own, see my Google Ads audit.
Campaigns by job type and season. Repair, replacement and installation, maintenance plans, and your company name each get their own campaign, with budgets planned around your peaks.
Call tracking. Calls from ads and from your website counted as conversions, so the account learns from the phone, not just clicks.
Weekly changes, monthly report. Search terms, negatives, budgets and schedules adjusted weekly; a monthly report on spend, calls and booked jobs by campaign.
Google Ads vs Local Services Ads for HVAC
| Search ads (Google Ads) | Local Services Ads | |
|---|---|---|
| How you pay | Per click | Per lead, according to Google |
| Where they show | In the ad slots on search results | In a unit Google shows prominently in local search results |
| What you control | Keywords, ad copy, landing pages, schedules and locations | Job types, service area, schedule and budget |
| Best for | Replacement, heat pump and maintenance searches you want to target closely | Ready-to-call repair searches in your area |
Google says Local Services Ads show prominently in search results, that you pay only for leads, and that your ad ranking may be affected if you regularly miss calls or messages (Google Local Services Help). I set up and manage Local Services Ads, or advise you on them if you'd rather run them yourself. Whether both fit your company depends on your market; we decide that on the strategy call.
HVAC advertising beyond search ads
"HVAC advertising" covers more than Google Search. Here's where other options tend to fit alongside it:
Remarketing to people who visited your replacement or financing pages but didn't call, during the weeks they're comparing quotes.
Video ads that show your team and trucks, useful before the season when people aren't searching yet.
Truck wraps, yard signs and mailers that make your name familiar, so it stands out when it shows up in search results later.
Maintenance-plan offers to past customers, who already know your company.
I add other campaign types only when call tracking shows search is covered and they produce calls.
Answering the calls you pay for
A paid call that rings out is the most expensive lead in the account. Ad schedules are set around when someone can take the call. Missed-call text-back isn't part of Google Ads management; it's a recommended add-on from my AI answering service, available now for Google Ads clients by request.

Frequently asked questions
How should an HVAC company budget Google Ads across the seasons?
Plan more spend for the weeks when cooling and heating demand peaks, and less in the mild months, then adjust week to week as the weather and your schedule change. Your own past call data is the best guide. If your techs are booked several days out, more budget can bring calls you can't take.
Do Local Services Ads work for HVAC companies?
They can. Google shows them prominently in local search results and charges per lead rather than per click. They suit companies that can answer calls and messages quickly, because Google says ad ranking may be affected if you regularly miss them. Many HVAC companies run them alongside search ads.
What HVAC advertising works besides Google Ads?
Remarketing to people who looked at replacement pages, short videos of your team, truck wraps and mailers that build name recognition, and maintenance-plan offers to past customers. These work best once search ads for repair and replacement are running and tracked.
Should repair, replacement and maintenance be separate campaigns?
Yes. They're searched differently, are worth different amounts and need different landing pages. Separate campaigns let you give replacement and heat pump searches their own budget so cheaper repair clicks don't use it up.
Can I pause Google Ads when my schedule is full?
Yes. Budgets and schedules can be lowered or paused when your techs are booked out and raised again when the schedule opens. Terms are month-to-month, with no minimum term and 30 days' notice.
How do you measure whether HVAC ads are working?
By calls and booked jobs by campaign, not clicks. Calls from ads and your website are tracked as conversions, and where your scheduling data allows, matched to booked jobs and job types, so you can see whether replacement campaigns bring replacement work.
