Plumbing SEO That Makes the Phone Ring
Plumbing SEO is the work of making a plumbing company the one homeowners find and call when they search Google, Google Maps or an AI assistant for an emergency repair or a planned job in its service area. Most plumbing searches are urgent and close to home, so the plumber who shows up near the top of the map with a clear phone number often gets the job. I've worked in SEO and Google Ads for 14+ years, with 150+ dental & local service businesses served.
Three kinds of plumbing search, and what each one needs
Plumbing demand isn't one market. It's three, and each needs a different kind of page. US search volumes below are 12-month averages from OpenSEO (DataForSEO), pulled October 2026.
| Search type | Examples (monthly US searches) | What the homeowner needs to see | What I build |
|---|---|---|---|
| Emergency: water where it shouldn't be | "emergency plumber near me" (about 135,000), "24 hour plumber" (about 8,100), "burst pipe" (about 2,400) | Your phone number, that you're open now, and that you cover their town | Fast emergency pages with tap-to-call at the top, accurate hours and the areas you reach |
| Urgent but schedulable | "drain cleaning near me" (about 110,000), "water heater repair near me" (about 90,500) | That you do this exact job, how soon you can come, and reviews from neighbors | One page per service: drains, water heaters, toilets, leaks, garbage disposals |
| Planned, high-ticket | "sewer line repair near me" (about 74,000), plus water heater replacement, tankless installs and repiping | How the job works, the options, how long it takes and why to trust you with it | Detailed project pages: sewer camera inspection and repair options, tank vs tankless, repiping, remodel plumbing |
Planned jobs are often the higher-value work, and they're the searches many plumbing websites ignore. A homeowner deciding how to fix a sewer line reads before they call. If your page answers their questions, you're the one they call.
Why plumbers lose jobs on Google Maps
| What you see | Usual cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| You're on the map near your house but nowhere in the towns you want | Your address anchors the profile, and you have few reviews or links in the other towns | Build prominence town by town: reviews from jobs there, local links, and a page for each town with real content |
| Franchises and lead-gen sites outrank you | They have more pages, more links and more reviews | Win on the specific jobs and towns they cover thinly, and out-review them locally |
| Google suspends or won't verify your profile | A home address showing on a service-area business, a business name stuffed with keywords, or a virtual office | Set the profile up the way Google's guidelines require (below) |
| Lots of calls for small, low-ticket jobs, few for sewer or repipes | The site only targets emergency and drain terms | Add planned-job pages that answer how-to-choose questions |
| You list 24/7 but calls go to voicemail at night | Hours set to "open 24 hours" with no one answering | Answer around the clock or list your real hours. Unanswered night calls waste the emergency rankings you've earned |
How my plumbing SEO process works
Audit and fix list (weeks 1-2). I review your Google Business Profile, where you rank on the map for each job in each town you serve, your site's speed on a phone, and how the top local competitors and franchises are winning.
Fix the profile and site (month 1). Categories, service area, hours, name, address and phone matched everywhere, a phone number that's tap-to-call on every page, and call tracking by source.
Build emergency and service pages (months 1-4). Emergency, drain, water heater and leak pages first, because they bring calls soonest.
Build planned-job pages (from month 2, inside the same months 1-4 core work). Sewer line, repiping, tankless, remodel plumbing and any commercial work, written to answer the questions homeowners ask before a big job.
Grow prominence and report (ongoing). Reviews from every job, local links from suppliers, builders, realtors and community groups, and a monthly report on calls, booked jobs and Maps rank by job type.
Local SEO for plumbers
Google ranks local results on relevance, distance and prominence (Google Business Profile Help). Most plumbers work at the customer's home, so the profile has to follow Google's service-area rules (Google):
- Hide your home address. Google's own example is a plumber who runs the business from home: clear the address and set a service area instead.
- No virtual offices or mailbox addresses. A second profile needs a real, staffed location with its own service area.
- Keep the service area realistic. Google says it generally shouldn't extend beyond about 2 hours of driving from where you're based, and a tighter area you can actually cover is easier to rank in.
- Use your real name. Hypothetical example: "[Business name] Plumbing" is fine. "[Business name] Plumbing 24/7 Emergency Plumber [City]" breaks Google's name rules (no hours or service details in the name) and is a common reason for suspensions.
- Set "Plumber" as your primary category and add only the secondary categories for work you really do.
- Ask every customer for a review, the same way, without scripting what they say. Google doesn't allow businesses to ask for specific review content or to ask only happy customers (Google).
For businesses outside the trades, the same Maps work is covered on my local SEO services page.
Trust closes the plumbing call
A homeowner letting a stranger into their house, often in a hurry, looks for quick proof that you're legitimate. Every service page should show:
Your license number, where your state licenses plumbers, and that you're insured.
Real photos of your trucks, your team and finished work, not stock images.
Recent reviews that mention the kind of job on the page.
Who's coming: the technicians or the owner, by name.
One clear next step: tap to call, with a booking option for non-emergencies.
Frozen pipes, storms and other spikes
Plumbing demand runs all year, but some searches spike with the weather. "frozen pipes" averages about 8,100 US searches a month over the year, yet had only 1,000 to 1,300 a month from July to September 2026 (OpenSEO). In cold-climate markets, a frozen-pipe and burst-pipe page should be published and earning links by early fall, and your profile should show winter-emergency availability before the first hard freeze. In warmer markets the spikes come from storms, flooding and sewer backups instead, and the calendar shifts with them.
Being recommended by AI assistants
Homeowners ask AI assistants such as ChatGPT or Google's AI Overviews "Who's a reliable plumber near me?" or "Should I get a tankless water heater?" AI tools pull from businesses whose details match everywhere and whose pages answer questions plainly. I write your key pages answer-first and add the matching schema markup. See how that works on my AEO and GEO page.
The 2 a.m. call
Emergency rankings only pay off if somebody picks up. A homeowner with water on the floor may call the next plumber after a few rings. Before pushing for more emergency calls, I check how night, weekend and busy-hour calls are handled. If that's the leak, an AI answering service for after-hours plumbing calls can help cover the calls your team can't take.
Plumbing SEO and Google Ads
Paid placements like Google Ads and Local Services Ads can put you above the map within days, which helps when you're launching a new service area or need to fill the schedule now. SEO builds the calls you don't pay per click for. Many plumbers use both, and the full plan is on plumbing marketing. If you also do heating and cooling, see HVAC SEO: the seasons and searches are different, so those pages need their own plan.

Frequently asked questions
What is plumbing SEO?
Plumbing SEO is optimizing a plumber's website, Google Business Profile and online listings so the business ranks in Google search, the map results and AI answers when nearby homeowners need an emergency plumber, drain cleaning, water heater work or a sewer repair.
How do I get more plumbing leads?
Quick gains often come from answering calls day and night and fixing your Google Business Profile. After that, add a page for each service and each planned job, ask for a review after every job, and earn rankings town by town. Google Ads can fill gaps while SEO builds.
How do you market a plumbing business?
Market a plumbing business by covering both kinds of demand: emergency searches, which need a strong map listing and fast tap-to-call pages, and planned jobs like sewer lines, repiping and water heater replacement, which need detailed pages that answer questions before the homeowner calls. Reviews, referrals from builders and realtors, and ads round it out.
How long does local SEO take for a plumber?
Expect profile fixes and emergency pages to start showing in the map results within the first few months. Planned-job pages and rankings in towns farther from your base often take six to twelve months. Competitive metro areas with franchises tend to take longer than smaller towns.
Do you work with service-area businesses without a storefront?
Yes, that's most plumbers. If customers never visit your home or shop, your Google profile should be a service-area business with the address hidden, which is exactly what Google's guidelines ask for. I set it up that way and draw the service area around the towns your trucks actually reach.
Can I rank in towns where I don't have an office?
Yes, within reason. You can rank in towns inside your service area by earning reviews from jobs there, building real local links and creating a useful page for each town. Rankings get harder the farther a town is from your base, so start with the towns closest to you that you most want.
Should my Google profile say I'm open 24 hours?
Only if someone answers 24 hours. Your hours have to reflect when customers can really reach you. Listing 24 hours and sending night calls to voicemail wastes the emergency calls your ranking earns.
Do I need to sign a long-term contract?
No. There's no long-term contract. Terms are month-to-month, with no minimum term and 30 days' notice, so you can stop whenever the work isn't earning its keep.
